Engineering Village 2 Includes Faceted Searching in Quick and Expert Search

Included in the July 18th product enhancement release of Engineering Village 2 is the inclusion of Faceted Search Results in the Quick and Expert Searches. Faceted Search Results provides researchers professionally indexed fields that reflect what is included in the results. Unlike the Faceted Browsing already available on Easy search, Faceted Searching allows the researcher greater flexibility and dynamic search results.

The Facets:
On the right hand side of the results page, a user will be given a breakdown of the records in their search results including:
• Most cited authors
• Controlled vocabulary
• Classification codes
• Document types
• Language
• Year of publication
• Publisher

The researcher is able to select the facets of interest and either include or exclude them when refining the search results. Faceted search results on Engineering Village 2 provide users the results they need faster and more accurately.

How Faceted Searching Works:
When including or excluding one or more of the data elements in the clustered search results, the system creates a path that further limits the original search resulting in a smaller, more focused answer set, yet keeping the search string visible.

This capability gives the end-user enormous control over the search process. Even when the starting point is general and the terms to be used are not completely clear to the searcher, presenting relevant terms and other essential bibliographic information in a clustered form makes, the search more focused and targeted rather than a browsing expedition.

RSS Feeds from Engineering Village 2
Providing tools to aid today’s researchers

RSS feeds are a growing trend in managing electronic content. Savvy web users are utilizing news aggregators to manage content of interest in a more organized and efficient way.

Ei is on the forefront of this technology and among the first content providers to offer this feature. RSS feeds are available with the July 18th release of Engineering Village 2. Users can set their own customized queries and have the benefit of reviewing literature in an integrated way. Used with Compendex, Inspec, or NTIS, users can receive weekly updates fed directly into their aggregators and manage all results in a more efficient manner. These feeds provide direct linking to Engineering Village 2 content and records of relevance can be viewed.

To set an RSS feed, create a search and from the results page, click the orange “RSS” button. A pop-up window appears allowing users to simply copy the URL linked to the search results and paste it into an aggregator. From there, Engineering Village 2 and the aggregator will do all the work!

Jill O’Neill, Director Planning & Communication, NFAIS sees the benefit of this emerging technology and states, “The availability of RSS feeds can facilitate user awareness of new content and amplify the conversation about that content.”

Blog This creates an HTML reference to Engineering Village 2 documents which can easily be incorporated into a weblog. Clicking the Blog This button from the abstract or detailed record screen, creates a pop-up screen with HTML code for that record. The user simply needs to copy that HTML code and paste it into their blog to create a blog reference to any database document found in Engineering Village 2.

Used in tandem RSS Feeds, and Blog This enable researchers to spend less time sorting through alerts lists and more time using the information most relevant to their fields of interest.
