2005
SLA Engineering Librarian of the Year Awarded to Joan
Dubis
The
SLA Engineering Division and Engineering Information are honored
to have awarded Joan Dubis, Research Librarian at Boeing - Huntington
Beach, CA with the 2004-2005 SLA Engineering Librarian of
the Year Award.
This prestigious award was presented during the SLA Annual conference
in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in recognition of Joan’s hard
work and dedication to her profession. Engineering Information
sponsors this award given to an individual who has distinguished
achievements in the engineering library profession, or within
the industry at large.
Nominated by her co-workers for her ongoing, long-term contributions
to the Boeing corporate libraries, Joan is regarded for "building
bridges, not walls."
Some of her achievements include writing and editing the Boeing
Library's Annual Report, writing monthly web-based articles for
the libraries' homepage, and participating in the "Ask-a-Librarian"
service. Joan has been a member of SLA since 1993, and has served
in Board positions for the local SLA-SC chapter.
Following his presentation of the award, Colby Ellis, President
and CEO of Elsevier Engineering Information, comments, “Ei
is proud to present this award each year to librarians who really
make a difference. Upon meeting Joan, her enthusiasm, energy and
commitment to her profession are apparent and it’s clear
to me why her peers felt her worthy of the award. On behalf of
Ei, I extend our sincere congratulations to Ms. Dubis.”

Sponsors ELD Annual Banquet at ASEE
Engineering
Information is proud to have sponsored the Engineering Libraries
Division (ELD) of the American Society for Engineering Education
(ASEE) Annual Banquet. ELD is composed of over 200 engineering
librarians and information professionals who share a commitment
to supporting engineering education and strengthening the role
of the library as part of that education. The banquet was held
on June 14, 2005 at the historic Governor’s Hotel in Portland,
Oregon, during the ASEE annual conference. Once again, the banquet
was a wonderful opportunity for library and information professionals
to network, socialize and enjoy a cocktail.
“ELD and its members do such important work to further the
education of today’s and tomorrow’s engineers,”
explained Ross Graber, Ei’s Director of Marketing. “Information
literacy is at the foundation of the skills engineers require
to succeed – and ELD members are passionate about their
role in the education process. Ei is extremely proud to lend our
support to ELD as we believe ELD truly makes a difference.”
Next year’s ASEE conference will be held from June 18th
– 21st in Chicago, Illinois.

Role
of Information in Innovation
The
study results are made available
Engineering
Information has been busy telling all of our customers about the
results from the independent study: “The Role of Information
in Innovation.”
Among the study’s key findings, it shows R&D scientists
and engineers feel there has been considerable change in their
work environments in recent years. Notably, 78% of respondents
indicated they now face greater expectations to contribute to
their company’s growth than they had 4-5 years prior. Increased
concern for achieving breakthroughs before their competitors was
cited by 63% of respondents.
The study also reveals that changes in the research environment
are resulting in changes in information behavior. Among R&D
scientists and engineers, 66% placed greater effort against examining
published research than they had previously. Not surprisingly,
84% of R&D workers indicated they feel it’s vital to
have access to the published experiences of other researchers.
“R&D workers have overwhelmingly indicated that the
research environment continues to grow more challenging”
explains Ross Graber, Marketing Director of Elsevier Engineering
Information.
“R&D organizations are being pushed to innovate faster
and deliver greater results. We see that R&D workers feel
strongly that information plays a vital role in their innovation
process. Without access to quality information tools their companies
would be at a significant disadvantage.”
