Chemistry Community Braces Itself for the Latest Release of ChemVillage
Technology
upgrade promises faster more efficient results
On
June 1 2004, Engineering Information will release the next generation
of ChemVillage www.chemvillage.org,
a web-based discovery platform for professionals and academics
working in the chemistry field.
The release will significantly upgrade the underlying technology
improving the research process. The FAST search engine and sophisticated
search tools have been implemented to deliver standard-bearing
search speed and functionality. Among the new features are:
• Multiple Database Searching with de-duplication
• E-mail search alerts
• Saved searches
• Search histories
• Browse-able look-up indexes
• Advanced linking options
The updated version of ChemVillage includes Chimica, a bibliographic
database covering the very latest scholarly journals on applied,
analytical, organic and inorganic chemistry. Additional content
sources are the Chemical Business NewsBASE which provides access
to industry news, Beilstein Abstracts, the leading resource for
organic chemistry literature and CHEMnetBASE, an online library
of critical chemistry handbooks.
Professionals, professors and students need to locate relevant
research materials in a rapid and organized fashion. The latest
improvements will translate to faster and easier searching for
researchers.
Engineering Information is now offering live training sessions
for ChemVillage. These demonstrations are given online via WebEx
and are hosted by the Engineering Information Librarian, Karen
Berryman. Sign up for a custom online session at: http://elsevier.webex.com.

University
of Ulster Becomes Initial Referex Engineering Customer
Specialized
electronic research product has its first subscriber
Congratulations
to the University of Ulster for becoming the initial customer
for Referex Engineering.
Taking advantage of a free 30-day trial, the University has decided
to subscribe to the Materials & Mechanical and the Electronic
& Electrical collections. With the Materials & Mechanical
collection the University now has access to over 110 full-text
handbooks and practical guides covering subjects including aeronautical
engineering, computer-aided design, production management and
robotics. The Electronics & Electrical collection offers the
university over 100 full-text titles comprising a comprehensive
range of subjects including audio electronics, image and video
processing, software engineering and video and television.
Patrick Teskey, Systems Support Librarian for the University is
excited about subscribing to Referex. He suggested that the subject
coverage was right on target with the school’s curriculum,
and was in keeping with the University’s commitment of providing
students research material electronically.

Engineering
Information Travels to Salt Lake City for the ASEE Conference
Major innovations see
ASEE for the first time
Engineering
Information will be exhibiting at the 2004 American Society for
Engineering Education Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah this
coming June (20-23).
The ASEE Annual Conference is dedicated to all disciplines of
engineering education. In the past it has proven to be an excellent
opportunity for Engineering Information to showcase its latest
developments.
Last year in Nashville, TN, Engineering Information released thesaurus
functionality on the Engineering Village 2 platform. At this year’s
event, Ei will be showcasing the addition of three major products
that have been added to the Engineering Village 2 platform in
the past six months: the Ei Backfile, the National Technical Information
Service database and Referex Engineering.
Please come by booth 105 and say hello.

Ei
Backfile Marches Toward Completion
Monumental
project draws to end
Files
dating from 1884 through 1969 have been loaded into the Engineering
Index Backfile. Subscribers will have access to over 1.7 million
historical references that cover virtually every major engineering
innovation from the late 19th century through most of the 20th.
Access to the Backfile will provide users with references that
have never been available electronically. For example, records
include an account of the suborbital flight of Astronaut Alan
B. Shepard Jr. in the Mercury Spacecraft in 1961, and an account
of atomic research and events which led to the launching of the
Manhattan Project in 1942.
For additional information on the Engineering Index Backfile please
contact the Ei Customer Support Team at eicustomersupport@elsevier.com.
