Introducing Ei Patents on Engineering Village 2™
Ei Patents provides an excellent source of technical intelligence for researchers by keeping them abreast of the latest developments and discoveries by other academic institutions and businesses working in their fields. Engineering Village 2’s superior, user-friendly analytic tools categorize search results into meaningful and usable
information. Ei Patents is available for subscription as of February 1, 2006.
Academic institutions and businesses reliant on R&D activity cannot afford to overlook the value of scientific and technical information found within patents. With an estimated 80% of scientific and technical information included in patents not available elsewhere, effective patent research is a requirement to stay competitive.
Ei Patents includes bibliographic information from the United Stated Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) dating from 1790, and the European Patent Office database, Esp@cenet dating from 1978. With Engineering Village 2’s unique analysis tools researchers can view at-a-glance, the Document Types (U.S./E.U. applications and Grants), Inventors, Assignees, Patent Codes with descriptions, Country, Year, and Language, of the patents. Search results are presented in clusters, or Faceted Search Results that allow a quick and straightforward view of leading inventors, technologies, countries, etc. Patent searches can be combined with our engineering databases, Compendex, Inspec, and NTIS, to offer unprecedented coverage of engineering information.
By using the facets, researchers can focus a search on U.S. and/or E.U. patents, discover the leading inventor/s, and even see what companies are leading in patents in a given field. This level of competitive intelligence allows researchers to save time and resources by dedicating their efforts on projects that are unique concepts that may lead to their own patents.
"Ei Patents on Engineering Village 2 offers a unique, competitive technical intelligence tool. In one click, users get insights into the data that is available at the search results page without using any additional tools,” said Rafael Sidi, VP, Product Development, Elsevier Engineering Information. “We believe that information professionals, researchers, engineers and students, will save tremendous amounts of time with patent research and the discovery process. Engineering Village 2's unique analysis tool is not available in any free web patent search product on the market today.”
Ei Patents combines patents, bibliographic data sources, and Engineering Village 2’s clustering tools to provide a more meaningful base of scientific and technical information not available with free web searching tools. Researchers have the ability to conduct combined searches with any or all of the bibliographic data sources available with their institution’s Engineering Village 2 subscription. Marydee Ojala, Editor, Online Information Today talks about some of Ei Patents’ key features in her blog:

Faceted
Searching Made Even More Powerful!
In July 2005, Ei introduced Faceted Search Results into the Engineering Village 2 user interface. This new feature gives users an at-a-glance summary of the search result content including: Author, Controlled
Vocabulary, Classification Code, Language, Year, and Publisher. Our customers responded enthusiastically to this new feature, so Ei is including more facet categories to make searching on Engineering Village 2 even more powerful. These new facets will enable users to easily refine their search results even further.
These new facet categories will be live on the Engineering Village 2 interface as of February 1, 2006. The categories to be added to the existing facets within our bibliographic databases Compendex,
Inspec and NTIS are:
| • |
Author Affiliation – View the top institutions publishing in the subject searched.
|
|
• |
Country (Author Country of Origin) – Isolate one or more countries and focus your search.
|
| |
|
With
the addition of Ei Patents to our suite
of offerings, a combined search of patents and bibliographic information
is available to those subscribing to Ei Patents. The faceted search
results that will appear on a combined search will show two combined
categories that incorporate patent and bibliographic information.
The faceted categories for a combined search will show:
 |
Database
–
Shows the number of records retrieved from your combined search. Each database searched will appear on the list with the number of records retrieved in brackets.
Author/Inventor –
The most prominent authors
in the bibliographic databases and the most prominent inventors
from the patents databases.
Author affiliation/ Assignee –
View the assignees from the patents databases as well as the assignees from the patents databases.
|
The
functionality of Engineering Village 2’s Faceted Search
Results will continue to allow researchers to select categories
and either include or exclude them and to Add a Term
when refining their results. They provide users the information
they need faster and more accurately than ever.

De-duplication
Feature is New and Improved
On Engineering Village 2
Ei has improved the functionality of Engineering Village 2’s De-duplication feature. This new functionality allows the researcher to see the total number of found records in a search, how many records are found in each database, and how many records were removed. Users will have the ability to choose the priority of the database when de-duplicating records.
When using this feature, execute and refine a search before de-duplicating your search results. Once the correctperameters are established, the last step in the process should be to click on the "Remove Duplicates" button on the interface.
Below are the steps to using the new De-duplication features:
Click
on screen to enlarge |
 |
Click the "Remove Duplicates" button and a new screen
will open. This screen contains several options for duplicates
removal: |
 |
 |
Select
the type of records that you will prefer to see. Choose from
full text, abstract or index terms. In this option you are
given the flexibility to decide which types of records you
prefer to see in the clean set of results. For example, if
you click ”Has Full Text” the system will remove
duplicates that do not have a full text and leave those that
do. |
 |
Select the database you prefer to receive results from. For example, if you chose “Compendex,” the system will remove the duplicates from Inspec and leave the unique records from Compendex. |
After selecting your preferences, click “Continue.” A new results page, featuring a clean set will appear.
Click
on screen to enlarge |
 |
De-duplication
criteria are presented for your review. |
 |
The
original search is presented. |
 |
The
total number of records removed in the De-duplication process
is presented. In brackets you can see how many records were
removed and from which database. |
 |
The
total number of original articles from each database is displayed
along with the number remaining from each data source. |
 |
This sign indicates that a duplicate for the record was removed. Clicking this symbol will open a new window containing the record’s detailed format and the database from which it was removed. For example, if Compendex was the preferred database, and a duplicate record, appearing in Inspec was removed from your set, this symbolwill show you the records in Inspec. This feature keeps you informed about the specific records that were removed and gives you a possibility to look at the record although you chose to remove it. |
Note:
once the De-duplication button is pressed, Faceted Search Results
will no longer appear on the screen.
For
more information please contact Ei Customer Support at eicustomersupport@elsevier.com
or 1-800-221-1044.
Notes:
**De-duplication is done for Compendex and Inspec databases only.
**You will see the duplication removal option only when you select
more than one database for your search.

Inspec
Re-indexing of Manufacturing & Production Section Now Live
on Engineering Village 2
To enhance the addition of the December 2003 Manufacturing & Production Engineering section of Inspec, the editors, The IEE, recently completed a major re-indexing of the database and records that pre-date the addition of the M&P section. The re-indexing enhancements are live on Engineering Village 2 as of February 1,2006 with all relevant records from 1969 to 2003 enhanced with the new M&P controlled vocabulary and classification codes. This re-indexing of the records enriches the data and will mean quicker, more precise search results for users of Inspec on Engineering Village 2.
Over 200 additional journals were added, over 650 new index terms were included into the Thesaurus, and over 100 new classification codes were created to categorize the records. Below is a small sample of the indexing terms applied to the records:
